What you can use it for
- Hiking & cycling
- Check the altitude of a trailhead, summit, or campsite, and gauge elevation gain along a route.
- Flood & drainage
- Compare the height of two points to understand which way water flows or how exposed a site is to flooding.
- Aviation & drones
- Know the ground elevation beneath a point when planning flight altitude above terrain.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I find the elevation of a location?
- Enter the latitude and longitude (for example 39.7392, -104.9903) and press Get elevation, or tap Use my location. The tool returns the height above sea level in both metres and feet for that exact point.
- What does elevation mean here?
- Elevation (or altitude) is the height of a point above mean sea level. A reading of 1,609 m means the ground at those coordinates sits about 1,609 metres higher than the average level of the sea.
- How accurate is the elevation data?
- Readings come from Google's elevation dataset, which is interpolated from a global digital elevation model. Accuracy is best in well-surveyed areas; the tool also shows the data resolution so you can judge precision. It reflects ground/terrain height, not the height of buildings.
- Can I find my current elevation?
- Yes. Tap Use my location and allow location access — your browser provides your coordinates and the tool looks up the elevation for that spot. Note that the coordinates you look up are sent to the Google Elevation API to retrieve the altitude.
